Why has the smartpen OLED screen warranty been extended on Echo and Sky/wifi smartpens?
Thanks to ongoing improvements in OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology, Livescribe is now able to offer smartpen customers a three (3) year warranty on the OLED display screen used in our smartpens. This extension applies to Echo and Sky/wifi smartpens purchased on or after January 1, 2015. For information on other smartpen components (housing, battery, etc.) please see 20107 - Smartpen warranty and technical support.
Livescribe has taken this step as part of our ongoing support for our many long-standing customers, and as a way to recognize improvements in OLED technology that we are passing on to our customers. OLED is a leading technology for small device displays, and allows the smartpen to be smaller and battery life to be longer compared to LCD screens which require a separate fluorescent backlight.
Warranty Extension FAQs
I just bought my smartpen in 2014 - does this warranty apply to me?
This warranty extension is for new or refurbished smartpens purchased on or after January 1, 2015. Please contact us for additional options if your smartpen is outside the original warranty period.
Is Livescribe admitting that OLED screens are defective?
OLED technology is a leading edge screen technology that allows our smartpens to display the smartpen status while also limiting battery drain and keeping our smartpens as thin as possible. Like many technologies, the underlying technology improves over time with new innovations, and we're deploying this policy to reflect improvements in OLED screen performance and reliability that we have adopted. Over the seven years Livescribe has been making smartpens with more than a million smartpens sold, our OLED displays have proven to be reliable and the vast majority of our customers have not encountered problems.
